my dear lauren bacall,
you are almost ninety years old. there is no reason to sugarcoat it. you have lived a long life and you are still living. you’ve been in this world since 1924. you’ve seen the roaring twenties, the great depression, the second world war, the cold war, the fall of the berlin wall, the communications age… the world keeps on changing, and you are still here, watching it all.
i just wanted to say, even though chances are you’ll never hear it, how much i admire you for outliving so much. for holding on. you are more than just an artist, betty, you have spoken to me. you have spoken to me like a friend would speak even though you have children who are old enough to be my grandparents.
hold on, betty. it’s not over yet. you still have years left to live. keep your head held high and don’t forget we are all so proud of you. thank you for holding on.
